Jim Beloff's Ukulele book signing

Last night (Tuesday) I went to Book Soup on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood to see Flea Market Music founder Jim Beloff. He was there to sign the updated edition of his seminal book, THE UKULELE: A VISUAL HISTORY. The couple of dozen people in attendence (many of whom brought their own ukuleles along) were treated to a musical performance by the living legend, Bill Tapia, who demonstrated his spry fingerwork on renditions of "Crazy" and "Just a Gigolo." Everyone was blown away by this 96-year-old player, who was dressed in snazzy green pants, a red plaid sports jacket and a black beret. Travis Harrelson, also featured in the book, showed off his unique strumming style on several songs.

The book itself is a treasure to behold. This updated edition is hardbound, with color pictures throughout, and 16 new lavishly illustrated pages. Included in the updated pages are profiles of newcomers like Jake Shimabukuro and Janet Klein, and lots of photos of new and old ukes. If you already have the old edition, the new one is well worth buying. Highly recommended. Link
