Lyda Fischer of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, will be celebrating her 100th birthday on Sunday. More proof of the ukulele's life-sustaining powers. (Maybe we should set her up with Tappy?)
If you live in or near Beaver Dam, give a call over to the Golden LivingCenter and see if you can drop by and sing Lyda "Happy Birthday" and play her a few tunes. She went to school with Fred MacMurray, so I'll bet she has some good stories to tell. Link

Jake Brings Down The Herbst
Caught Jake Shimabukuro's sold-out performance last night at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. He bought down the house in his customary style, and I picked up a few news items to pass along.
First, Jake will be releasing a new "mini album" of 6 cover songs on September 18, 2007. Included will be the Lennon/McCartney classic "In My Life," which Jake played last night. Also to be released on DVD on September 18th is "Hula Girls," a Japanese film for which Jake wrote the musical score. (It's currently playing at the 4 Star Theatre in San Francicso.)
Jake also let slip the fact that as a kid he frequently over-indulged in Shirley Temple cocktails. His song, "Me and Shirley T" was inspired by his sugar-infused addiction, and he joked that only recently learned that Shirley Temple is a real person. I wonder if he knows that she plays the uke. (Bill Tapia taught her!).
Nice press for the event! Link
And mahalo nui loa to Stephen Becker for the ticket!

Tessie Sez...
Folks at my office were always forgetting to take their front door keys when popping down to Peet's for a caffeine fix. So I appointed Tessie O'Shea to be Tesser's official hall monitor (Tessie, Tesser. Works, don't it?).
